Historic Local Institution Rebrands as Museum of Kansas City

The Kansas City Museum has transformed into The Museum of Kansas City, marking a significant evolution in its 85-year legacy. The institution announced this pivotal rebranding initiative as it embarks on its anniversary celebration.

“When we completed the renovation of Corinthian Hall, we knew we needed a name and brand identity that better communicates who we are and celebrates the stories we tell,” said Anna Marie Tutera, director and CEO of the museum. “We wanted a vibrant brand identity that reflects the museum’s mission to connect, inspire and celebrate the threads that make up Kansas City’s rich cultural tapestry.”

The new brand identity embodies the concept of interconnected narratives, where individual stories converge and interweave to create a broader cultural narrative. Similar to how a loom transforms individual threads into a tapestry, the reimagined logo represents the museum’s dedication to weaving together diverse perspectives and voices that collectively tell Kansas City’s story.

Throughout 2025, visitors will witness the gradual implementation of The Museum of Kansas City’s new brand identity across all museum assets. The refreshed design incorporates Kansas City’s signature red and blue colors, symbolizing both the welcoming spirit of the community and the dynamic energy of its residents. The institution’s rich history of cultural preservation and community engagement will continue to evolve through future variations of the logo, showcasing specific themes, communities, and collaborative initiatives across various projects, programs, and exhibitions.

The rebranding extends to the museum’s amenities, including Wisteria, the museum’s boutique; Elixir, the soda fountain; and Café at 3218, the culinary programming venue. This comprehensive transformation coincides with the institution’s 85th anniversary since its founding on May 5, 1940, in Kansas City’s historic Northeast district.

The anniversary celebrations will feature numerous special events, including the anticipated 10th annual derby party, alongside new exhibits and educational programs. Additionally, the museum continues its ambitious “Making a Museum KC” capital campaign, securing funds for the complete restoration and revitalization of the historic property.
