“Kids Ride Free!” all summer on Topeka city busses

Topeka kids can now look forward to a break from school, with summer right around the corner, as well as a free transportation around Topeka on city busses.

Since the summer of 2013, Topeka Metropolitan Transit Authority has offered bus transportation at no cost on all fixed routes to youth ages 18 and under. They are again launching this popular promotion from May 15 through August 15.

“The Kids Ride Free! promotion is a great opportunity for the youth in our community,” said Topeka Metro Director of Marketing & Communications Keri Renner. “Riding the bus provides safe, reliable transportation that parents can feel good about. Kids can ride the bus to the pools, get to summer school or work, or visit friends or family.”  In fiscal year 2018, Topeka Metro provided 41,100 rides to Topeka kids.

Renner said that when youth ride the bus it familiarizes them with public transit and helps them to become a confident navigator of their own transportation. “Topeka has many youth activities and places to go in Topeka, we want them to have the chance to experience their city while saving money, too.”

No IDs are necessary when boarding for those 18 and under during the promotion. Maps and time points for routes are posted on Topeka Metro’s website and in all of the Topeka Metro shelters.  For questions or help with trip planning, call Topeka Metro Customer Service at 785-783-7000.

Topeka Metro is also currently celebrating Older Americans Month by offering Seniors (age 65+) free fixed route rides throughout the month of May.
