Trump Delays TikTok Ban with Executive Order Promise, App Access Restored

Access to TikTok has been restored in the United States after Trump pledged to sign an executive order delaying the federal ban. This move comes after a brief outage on Sunday, during which TikTok became unavailable to U.S. users. On Truth Social, Trump announced his intention to extend the period before the law’s prohibitions take effect, citing ongoing negotiations to protect national security.

The announcement came as millions of U.S. users found themselves unable to access the TikTok app or platform due to a federal law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell its U.S. operations by Sunday or face a ban. Supreme Court signaled skepticism over TikTok’s legal challenge leading up to the deadline.

Trump indicated a desire for the U.S. to take a 50 percent ownership stake in a joint venture with TikTok, possibly involving current or new owners. Security concerns remain significant, including potential Chinese Communist Party influence over TikTok’s users, control over user feeds and potential disinformation spread.

Data privacy experts warn about TikTok’s data collection practices, with some comparing the app’s addictive nature to digital fentanyl. The law, which allows the sitting president to grant a 90-day extension if a viable sale is in progress, was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court last week.
