It takes hundreds of caring volunteers to provide a safe and wholesome camping experience for children from some of Kansas City’s most impoverished neighborhoods at City Union Mission’s Camp CUMCITO. Currently a shortage of volunteers could impact the Mission’s ability to welcome all of the 630 campers who hope to attend this summer. City Union Mission is an evangelical Christian ministry committed to sharing the Gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are poor or homeless.
Located near Warsaw in the Missouri Ozarks, the peaceful and natural setting offers children ages 4 to 16 an escape from the heat, noise and dangers of the city. Beginning June 26 and running through August 6, weeklong sessions are held for campers according to their age groups, and several sessions have volunteer staff slots yet to be filled.
The Mission urgently needs volunteer kitchen staff—cooks, dishwashers and food prep assistants—for the week of July 3 through 9. A nurse, an assistant nurse and 14 cabin staff are needed for the week of July 10 through 16. Other positions throughout the camping schedule also need to be filled, including arts and crafts directors, lifeguards and worship leaders.
“If you have specific skills or experience or simply want to share God’s love with children who need guidance and attention, we have a place for you.”

“If you have specific skills or experience or simply want to share God’s love with children who need guidance and attention, we have a place for you,” said Executive Director Dan Doty. “We’ve witnessed over and again how just a week at camp, in the care of kind and loving volunteers, can truly boost children’s self-esteem and change their perspective on life.”
