Missouri Judge Retention 2022 Election Guide

Voters routinely, and overwhelmingly, say that voting for retaining judges is the most difficult issue on a ballot. While a thorough examination of each judge’s lifetime of cases and the ramifications would be difficult, if not impossible, there is information that can help voters with their decision. Here’s a breakdown each judge up for retention on Nov. 8. It includes what governor appointed them, and some pertinent information.

Missouri Supreme Court

Zel M. Fischer.

Justice Fischer was appointed to the Supreme Court in 2008 by Republican Governor Matt Blunt.

Attended William Jewell College where he received a BA in philosophy and political science. Graduated UMKC Law School with distinction in 1988. Served as law clerk for Missouri Supreme Court Justice Andrew Jackson Higgins. Practiced law in NW Missouri before being elected associate circuit judge for Atchison County. Served there until his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2008. Was retained by voters in 2010 and this will be his second retention vote (every 12 years).

Was the lone justice disagreeing with a Missouri Supreme Court decision that found unconstitutional a law prohibiting Medicaid payments to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.

Headed up training for judges across the state in the science around covid and vaccines. The Supreme Court justices then educated other judges in anticipation of lawsuits over liability and restrictions. “The fear of policy makers is that there will be a lot of liability-type claims, not just medical delivery, but also against premises … possibly landlord/tenant. Somebody somewhere is going to be creative. We have to be nimble, to adjust,” Fischer stated. Fischer said it is imperative that Judges have the knowledge to adequately hear cases and understand the science in a rapidly changing vaccine science and liability environment.

Robin Ransom

Appointed to the Missouri Supreme Court in 2021 by Republican Gov. Mike Parson. Term ends Dec. 2022. First Black woman to hold the position.

Prior employment: St. Louis County Public Defender’s Office, 1992–1995; and the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, 1995–1996.

Ransom has told media outlets she follows the law wherever it might lead. ‘I’m not here to try and bend it or pull it, twist it, recreate it,’ said the University of Missouri School of Law graduate. ‘We’re here to read it and interpret it as it stands. I’m not an activist, so I don’t try and add to it or pull it my way.”

Says Ransom, ‘I am never afraid to speak out, to question, to take center stage if need be. This is not out of self-importance or cockiness, but out of confidence.’ … ‘It is a true honor to represent the citizens of the state of Missouri, … This job is not about your personal accolades and individual success. It is about working to make sure that our judicial system continues to operate on a level of excellence and fairness. With my job comes a lot of responsibility and that is not a charge that I take lightly.’4
