Each year, thousands of young men and women apply to one of the nation’s numerous service academies such as West Point.
Applications for nominations are handled through the offices of Congressional members.
This year, Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler is hosting an in-person event at the Warrensburg High School on Sept. 9 from 6 to 8 pm.
Interested individuals will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from:
- Military Academy at West Point
- Naval Academy
- Air Force Academy
- Merchant Marine Academy
- Coast Guard Academy
- University ROTC programs
- Representatives from U.S. Senate offices

Hartzler says it’s a great way for parents, students, and young adults to learn about the options and process. School educators and administrators are all welcome to the Military Service Academy Information Day.
“The application and selection process to attend a U.S. Service Academy is very competitive and requires students to be meticulous,” Hartler says. “This event presents the perfect opportunity for you and your children to gain the knowledge and expertise needed to submit a quality application for consideration to receive a nomination from me and ultimately an appointment to one of our U.S. Service Academies.”
As a part of the information day, middle and high school students and their families will have the opportunity to visit with Hartzler and hear from representatives of the academies.

While anyone can attend the informational meeting, regulations require that a nominee reside in the district that the nominating Member of Congress represents.
Each applicant for a nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1st of the year of admission to an academy:
- Age: Be at least 17 years old, but not have passed the 23rd birthday
- Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen
- Marital Status: Must be unmarried, not pregnant, and without legal obligation to support children or other dependents
- Residence: Residence: In order to receive a nomination from your Congressional representative, applicant must have a legal residence within the boundaries of that district
- Skill / Fitness: Must meet the medical, physical, and academic requirements of the Academy
What is a nomination?
Members of Congress may nominate applicants who meet the eligibility requirements established by law. A candidate may seek a nomination from the following:
- A member of the U.S. House of Representatives who represents the congressional district in which the candidate resides
- Both U.S. Senators from his or her state
- The Vice-President of the United States
