CNN’s Christiane Amanpour asks if the FBI should have banned Trump chant as ‘hate speech’

CNN’s Christiane Amanpour is facing criticism after asking a bizarre question about whether the FBI should have shut down the “hate speech” of ’lock her up’ in the 2016 election.

Amanpour was interviewing former FBI Director James Comey about the end of the Mueller investigation when she made the odd inquiry.

“Of course, ‘lock her up’ was a feature of the 2016 Trump campaign,” she said.

“Do you in retrospect wish that people like yourself, the head of the FBI, I mean, the people in charge of law and order, had shut down that language, that it was dangerous potentially, that it could have created violence, that it was kind of hate speech?” Amanpour asked. “Should that have been allowed?”

“That’s not a role for government to play,” responded Comey.

“The beauty of this country is that people can say what they want even if it’s misleading and it’s demagoguery,” he said.

“The people who should have shut it down were Republicans who understand the rule of law and the values that they claim to stand for,” he added. “Shame on them, but it wasn’t a role for government to play.”

Amanpour was criticized for the question that appeared to advocate against free speech.

“Amazing that there are so many journalists like Amanpour who are rich and famous because of the 1st Amendment- Who have apparently neither read nor understood the 1st Amendment,” tweeted former CIA analyst Buck Sexton.

The U.S. has more expansive free speech rights afforded to their citizens than other countries like Canada and the U.K., where the government has been tasked with stamping out what they define as “hate speech.”
