For fans, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ succeeds with a compelling story

Avengers: Endgame is the Russo Brother’s love letter to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that doesn’t disappoint through its epic 3 hour and 1 minute runtime. The film sets out to accomplish what Earth’s Mightiest Heroes couldn’t get done in Infinity War and, oh boy, does it do it!

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo, the film begins with the surviving Avengers at an all-time low shortly after the events of the Russo Bros previous MCU installment. The cast of characters are hungry for revenge; desperate even. The directors really use the momentum from Part 1 of the Thanos films to propel the heroes into a fight for their lives yet again. However, this fight is with a more contempt Thanos. One who has already won the battles and the war.

As the film progresses, fans of the Disney mega-franchise will find some of their nerdy little prayers answered with some truly, well-deserved, fan-serviced moments. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll smile so hard your cheeks will hurt. Avengers: Endgame set out to make a compelling story to one of the world’s largest and most beloved franchises and I can gladly say they accomplished their goal. As someone who has felt superhero burnout after the last few iterations into the genre, I can proudly say that the film exceeded my expectations in every way.

Now, there are still the common complaints most will have, i.e. large CGI battles, but what Endgame does that not many other MCU films have done is actually develop their characters and push them to their limits. Of course we’ve all seen Captain America duke it out with Thanos, but rarely have we had glimpses into how Cap actually felt. Loss of life and the battles fought have really taken a toll on the Avengers, and it really shows. Desperate actions are taken by our broken, beaten heroes that ultimately leads them to self reflect on who they really are; who are they doing this for.

This is the core of Avengers: Endgame. What Disney and the Russo Brothers have done in these last two movies has really brought home the 10 painstaking years of work that has led up to this moment. The era of the OG Avengers may have ended with this film, but with a new dawn of heroes has just begun. Endgame is like a farewell to your friends after a night of merrymaking, but you know that you’ll be seeing them again tomorrow and for the years to come.

Avengers: Endgame is rated PG-13 and opens April 26.
Avenger: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. (Ironman, Sherlock Holmes, Avengers: Infinity War)and Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War).
