MoDOT to hold job fair at City Union Mission

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is in dire need of workers in the coming months and will hold a job fair July 19 at Kansas City’s largest homeless shelter.

MoDot shares the same challenge as hundreds of thousands of businesses across the nation in finding workers. Things are improving in Missouri where the federal unemployment supplement is coming to an end. During the 2020 pandemic, unemployed workers in many states received benefits that would equal the monthly salary for a $50,000 per year job. Many businesses and agencies struggled to compete with that, including the Missouri Department of Transportation.

Now, they hope to fill 60 jobs and will be at City Union Mission’s Christian Life Center to assist in the online application process.  Anyone can apply. The fair is Monday, July 19, from 9 am to 11 am. The mission is located at 1111 E. 1oth Street, Kansas City, Mo.

The department will soon begin hiring maintenance personnel for winter operations and other year-round jobs. Right now, there are over 60 full-time maintenance and emergency equipment operator positions available in the Kansas City region and surrounding counties. Hourly salaries range from $14.75 to $16.62 per hour, depending on the level of experience and area of operation. Opportunities for year-round employment include mowing, striping, and other maintenance functions to keep Missouri roads safe for all who travel on them.

“We want to get the word out,” said Chief Executive Officer Dr. Terry Megli. “The Mission is excited to be able to offer our facilities for this event.”

Megli says their hope is that some in the shelter will qualify for the job opportunity but stresses anyone in the community can go through the application process.

The state jobs are full-time and employees will receive full training and a long list of other benefits. Applicants need to be at least 18 years old, have a Class B CDL permit (written portion), and successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screening.

“The folks in Kansas City have supported the work of City Union Mission for nearly 100 years, and we want to always be conscientious in keeping our eyes and ears open to ways that we can support the community in any way we can.” Megli said.

For inquiries regarding the morning of the application process or other details, please contact Damon Hayward at (816) 222-5073.

Parking available to the west of the building, inside the fenced entrance off 11th street.
