With Veteran’s Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11, attention is turning to honoring those who have made our freedoms possible – our vets.

One church is having a big impact in the life of Kansas City veterans.  On Nov. 9, representatives of Orrick Christian Church dropped by the Veterans Community Project Outreach Center in Kansas City to deliver more than 700 items and over $1700 in donations as a tribute to veterans.  Pastor Art Endlsey and Church Board Chairman, Tim O’Dell from Orrick were joined by Mike and Barbara Britt of Excelsior Springs for a presentation to Michele Orpin, Director of Development.

“As a church, we deeply appreciate the freedom of religion and freedom of speech that we are blessed with in this country.  We owe a huge debt of gratitude to veterans that have insured these privileges,” stated Pastor Art Endsley.  For three weeks the church conducted a food and hygiene item drive along with the collection of money and gift cards as a tribute to veterans.

The Veterans Community Project Village – KC, is located at 89th and Troost in Kansas City. This innovative solution to the challenges vets face encompasses 49 tiny houses for vets experiencing homelessness. The homes range in size from 240 to 320 square feet, meet all local city code requirements, and connect to city utility services. Approximately 70 percent of the Village construction was performed by community volunteers.

According to their website, “many Veterans arrive at VCP Village with little more than the pain, uncertainty, and loneliness of life on the streets. A tiny house provides everything he or she needs to live with dignity and safety; new furniture, appliances, housewares, bedding, food, and utilities, free of charge.”
