After a long delay, the producers of “The Chosen” announced that the first episode of season four will be available on the show’s app at 6 p.m. this Sunday. “The wait is finally over,” producer and director Dallas Jenkins said. “The response from those who’ve seen season four in theaters was that this is our best season, so I can’t wait to deliver these episodes free and easy to the world.”

The delay was explained in a recent video update when series creator Dallas Jenkins announced it was due to ongoing legal matters.

The Chosen” will release two new episodes a week on the app on Sundays and Thursdays throughout June. A legal dispute behind the delay involved The Chosen LLC and its onetime partner, Angel Studios. Although Angel Studios initially was responsible for the primary distribution of the show, “that is no longer the case,” Jenkins told Religion News Service.

“Our strong assessment is that for us to sustain ourselves in the future and to be able to not only generate income for the money that has already been spent but also for future seasons, we have to find a new path, and we have to find a new form of partner,” he said.

With more than 200 million viewers, “The Chosen” has far outpaced the reach of typical faith-based fare, receiving shoutouts from the likes of Kourtney Kardashian and country singer Blake Shelton. In addition to the Chosen app, viewers currently can watch seasons one through three on Amazon Prime, Hulu and Peacock and season one on Netflix. Seven seasons are expected in total, and “The Chosen” currently is filming season five. Jenkins said the 600 fans who were invited to the Utah set as extras added emotional depth to the Holy Week scenes they have been filming.

“If season five lives up to the intensity and the passion that’s taking place on set,” he said, “it’s gonna for sure be our most impactful season yet.”
