City Union Mission camp urgently needs 7 more volunteers

City Union Mission’s Camp CUMCITO is only made possible by the multitude of caring volunteers who give their time to provide a safe and wholesome camping experience for children from some of Kansas City’s most impoverished neighborhoods. A shortage of volunteers could impact the Mission’s ability to welcome the more than 600 campers who hope to attend this summer. The organization is an evangelical Christian ministry committed to sharing the Gospel and meeting the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of men, women and children who are poor or homeless.

Located near Warsaw southeast of Kansas City, the peaceful and natural setting offers children ages 4 to 17 an escape from the heat, noise and dangers of the city. Camp began on June 24 and runs through August 4. Week-long sessions are held for campers according to their age
groups, and several sessions have volunteer staff slots yet to be filled.

Most urgently needed are 7 positions to fill the week of July 22 to July 28, and 20 positions for July 29 to August 4.  Those volunteer roles include cabin staff; cook and assistant cook; journalist; chapel, crafts and recreation leaders; and housekeeping. Bus monitors and attendants to help campers load luggage and to accompany them on their rides to and from Camp CUMCITO are also be needed, approximately 5 on departure days and 5 on returning days, each week.

“If you want to share the love of Jesus with children who need guidance and loving attention, want to give back to your local community, or have specific skills you can contribute, we need you,” said Executive Director Dan Doty. “We’re praying all positions will be filled so we can welcome every child who wants to attend and ensure no boy or girl is disappointed.”

Those who are interested in filling a volunteer position at Camp CUMCITO are asked to email campworkers@cityunionmission.org or call (816) 329-1425 for details.
