Construction brings big traffic, parking changes at KCI

construction

Travelers, or those picking them up or dropping them off, will see construction on KCI’s new one terminal airport starting Friday, May 10. The first changes affect Terminal B and C.

To accommodate new construction, the circle lots of E1, E2 and International Circle in front of Terminal A will close. The circle lot closures mean drivers won’t be allowed to enter, but returning travelers already parked in these  lots will be able to exit. These lots are permanently closing.

The remaining portion of the loop will be turned into two-way traffic with roundabouts that will be used to get traffic into the two running terminals. There will be two lanes each way with a concrete barrier between. Construction on the new roundabouts will begin in August with several phases through the Fall. Drivers should be prepared for lane closures during this time.

In order to access terminal B and C, inbound traffic will be diverted the other way on Cookingham Drive to outbound International Circle. It will become a two-way road with two lanes of travel in each direction separated by a concrete median.

This new traffic change will remain in place throughout construction of the new $1.5 billion terminal at KCI.

The new terminal and garage will span International Circle, which links the three existing terminals.

Before the traffic changes take effect, two surface level lots will close as part of the construction project. Circle lot E-1 will close on May 10 and Circle lot E-2 will close May 14. These are permanent closures. The Aviation Department has been notifying drivers with signs at the airport. Circle lots E-3 and E-4 will remain open during the construction process.

Any vehicle that remains in the two surface lots after they are closed will be relocated to a nearby lot. Drivers can get their vehicles by calling 816-243-8019, or can be transferred from the KCI Airport Information line at 816-243-5237. Drivers will be charged the Circle Lot rate for the duration of the vehicles stay.

The construction team started demolition of Terminal A garage on April 29 to clear the way for the new terminal at KCI.

The Kansas City Aviation Department broke ground on the new terminal on March 25. They hope to have the new terminal finished by 2023.
