‘Evangelicals for Biden’ having buyers remorse over abortion

A group that billed itself as “Evangelicals for Biden” is having buyer’s remorse. In spite of President Biden’s long history of support for abortion, the group had supported his candidacy. They now contend they feel “betrayed” by expanded taxpayer-funded abortions included the relief bill passed by the Senate and other pro-abortion policies.

They outlined their regrets in a weekend letter to Biden saying that gave their support to President Joe Biden, drawing many other voters in with them, believing he would seek “common ground” with pro-life Americans on abortion.

At the time of their endorsement, many pro-life organizations and activists questioned the group’s rush to support a candidate who, even on the campaign trail, said he supported abortions with no restrictions.

The pro-life community is now giving a collective “we told ya so,” as Evangelicals for Biden scurries to control the damage.

For its part, the group now says they must force action, though there’s little for the group to do.

“We feel used and betrayed and have no intention of simply watching these kinds of efforts happen from the sidelines,” the group wrote. “Many evangelicals and Catholics took risks to support Biden publicly. President Biden and Democrats need to honor their courage.”

The group revealed the Biden campaign had reached out to them in 2020, seeking dialogue.

“The Biden team wanted to talk to us during the campaign to gain our support, and we gave it on the condition there would be active dialogue and common-ground solutions on the issue of abortion,” they continued. “There has been no dialogue since the campaign.”

The pro-life website LifeSite News reminded the group that Biden’s radical pro-abortion beliefs were no secret.

“Biden was not moderate on the campaign trail. “Quite the opposite, he abandoned all ‘common ground’ on abortion and embraced a radical pro-abortion agenda,” LifeNews writes.”That included ending his long-time support of the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding for most abortions in Medicaid and other federal programs.”

The new spending bill that Democrats said was for COVID-19 relief, actually devoted only 9 percent of the $1.9 trillion package to actual covid prevention. The rest, according to news reports went to pork-barrel spending projects such as new bridge linking New York and Canada and billions for an over-budget high-speed rail line in California.

Polls consistently show most voters, including many Democrats, don’t support taxpayer funding for abortion. Polls from  Marist and found that six in 10 Americans (60 percent) oppose taxpayer funding of abortion. A Harvard University/Politico poll found that 58 percent oppose it.

Evangelicals for Biden was warned in the fall about their misplaced support of Biden.

Writing for the opinion website Stream.com, Metro Voice Columnist Michael Brown criticized their thinking. Brown said their support was like their leaders stating, “In other words, while we think the slaughter of tens of millions of innocent babies is a bad thing, we’re willing to sacrifice their lives before they enter the world by voting Democrat, since we prefer the Democratic Party’s other policies. Seriously?

How much different is this than saying, “While we have a problem with Pol Pot’s genocidal policies, we do think his other reforms serve in the best interest of the country, and so he gets our vote.”

Brown and others now say the damage has been done, and for Evangelicals for Biden, there’s no way to put the genie back in the box.
