In a recent study, the Media Research Center (MRC) has brought to light concerning findings regarding Google’s purported manipulation of search results to promote leftist candidates and censor their opponents. The report, spanning from 2008 to February 2024, suggests that Google has consistently favored liberal candidates, regardless of party affiliation, while actively suppressing opposing voices.

According to the MRC study, Google’s interference in elections has occurred on at least 41 occasions over the past 16 years. Dan Schneider and Gabriela Pariseau, Vice President and Editor of MRC Free Speech America, summarized their findings, stating, “In every case, Google harmed the candidates — regardless of party — who threatened its left-wing candidate of choice.”

Craig Huey, an economist, author, and commentator, responded to the study’s implications, remarking, “It’s not your imagination; the company is abusing its vast search power to push swing voters to Google’s goal of control.”

The report alleges that Google’s influence on American elections became evident during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 and intensified following the election of Donald Trump in 2016. Despite Google’s denial of bias, the MRC study asserts that the tech giant has consistently favored candidates aligned with its leftist values.

The problem goes much deeper than just the few cases that MRC studied, according to Elon Musk,  CEO of SpaceX and owner of Twitter.

Musk quote-tweeted a screenshot of the article and asserted that it “understates the magnitude of the problem.”

“Google interferes to help Democrats thousands of times every election season!” Musk wrote on Twitter. “This is to be expected when their censorship (aka ‘Trust & Safety’) teams are have [sic] far left political views

Responding to the accusations, Google defended its practices, stating that it maintains safeguards to ensure unbiased and accurate search results. However, the MRC remains steadfast in its call for investigation, urging Speaker Mike Johnson to scrutinize Google’s alleged violations of constitutional rights and interference in elections.

Conservative Americans, according to Huey, must demand measures to safeguard the integrity of elections and counter the influence of the radical left. In his book, “The Great Deception: 10 Shocking Dangers and the Blueprint for Rescuing the American Dream,” Huey addresses the dangers of voter manipulation and the importance of election integrity.

“I’ve written before on how Google has censored conservative sites and used algorithms to reduce the visibility of those they regard as hindrances to their leftist agenda,” Huey told Metro Voice. “This latest study is welcome proof that they are determined to control the narrative.”

The debate surrounding Google’s role in elections underscores broader concerns about the influence of technology companies on democratic processes. As calls for accountability grow louder, the future of online platforms in shaping political discourse hangs in the balance.

“Google has since made clear to any discerning observer that it has been — and will continue — interfering in America’s elections,” concluded the study’s authors, Schneider and Pariseau.

As the 2024 election is under way, the authors warn that Google is “coordinating with government to violate freedom of speech,” “interfering in elections by making unreported in-kind contributions,” and for “defrauding its users by failing to meet its Terms of Service,” they write.
