Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt on Monday withdrew his name from consideration to join the Trump administration as attorney general. The first-term U.S. Senator previously served as Missouri’s Attorney General.

“I ran for the U.S. Senate to represent the people of the Show Me State, and I’m just getting started. … We need America First fighters who don’t just say they support the agenda but who are willing to stand in the breach and actually fight for it and for the hopes and dreams of the American people,” Schmitt, a Republican, said in a Twitter post.

“I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and be a champion for President Trump in the Senate.”

The eventual pick, if confirmed by the Senate, will deal with ending several Biden administration legal challenges against Trump. Special counsel Special Counsel Jack Smith, who was appointed by AG Eric Garland, is pursuing cases against Trump for allegedly illegally retaining classified documents and for an alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

A federal judge last week vacated pretrial deadlines at the behest of Smith’s office in the election case. Smith is fighting a decision by another judge in Florida who dismissed the classified documents case in July.

The eventual AG pick is expected to easily be approved by a Republican-controlled Senate that is now expected to hold at least 53 seats in the chamber, according to projections from The Associated Press.
