New Year’s resolutions, goals, plans? God can make a way

Do you have New Year’s resolutions? Maybe you call them goals or plans. However you describe them, they’re a good thing to have.

The scriptures talk about making plans. Proverbs says our hearts plan our way and the Lord establishes how we get there. Not bad. Plans go awry without God.

Proverbs 16:3 says we each have plans, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” That verse assumes that we have plans. Resolutions are nothing more than planning for the future.
Colossians 3:9-17 talks about changing ourselves. That’s the heart of most resolutions–and the Gospel. We are being renewed by Christ.

Condensed, it says to put off the old self … put on compassionate hearts, kindness, humility … patience, bearing with one another; as the Lord has forgiven you, you must also forgive, … above all, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony … let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts …. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Forget diets, reading lists, exercise, better time use or nail-biting. If we make Colossians 3 our goal with God providing the steps, we will be renewed by becoming Christ-like as Eph. 4:22-24 promises.

That can change the world.  Happy New Year!
