Controversial former soccer player Megan Rapinoe upset fans after she claimed to have proved that God does not exist after an injury.
“I’m not a religious person or anything, and if there was a God, this is proof that there isn’t,” she said after she tore her Achilles tendon in the final game of her career last weekend. “You gotta find the silver lining and the dark humor, and that’s just who I am as well.”
During her career, Rapinoe made as many headlines for her anti-American protests as for her playing ability. In September, she refused to sing the national anthem at the last game she played as part of the U.S. women’s national team. As far back as September 2016, she refused to stand during the national anthem, taking a knee instead. “Quite honestly, being gay, I have stood with my hand over my heart during the national anthem and felt like I haven’t had my liberties protected,” she said.

In May 2019, Rapinoe told Yahoo Sports, “I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again,” boasting that she was “a walking protest when it comes to the Trump administration,” because of “everything I stand for.”
“I feel like it’s kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey and represent it,” she said. “Because I’m as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don’t get to tell me if I can be here or not.”
Former NFL quarterback Devlin Hodges joined a group that has taken displeasure in soccer star Megan Rapinoe’s comments about “there isn’t” a God.” Hodges saw the video clip of Rapinoe’s remarks and commented on his X account. “Wow,” he wrote. “For those seeing this. Just know there is a God and he has wonderful plans for those that believe in him!”
Hodges wasn’t the only one to comment on Rapinoe’s thoughts. Former ESPN anchor Sage Steele said that Rapinoe’s comments were “narcissism at its finest.”
Fans took to social media to comment.
Sure enough, it took less than 24 hours for the comments to blow up on Twitter.
“’If God existed, nothing bad would ever happen to me’” is her stated thinking here, and man that is a level of narcissism you rarely see,” @JonPgh tweeted.
“I, personally, believe this is a signal that God exists and is working harder than ever,” wrote @AverageChiesa.
“An atheist’s career ended in humiliation. Seems to me to be proof that God has a wicked sense of humor,” said @JenWEsq.
