CNN’s Jake Tapper calls out Hollywood, businesses for ignoring abuses in China

Jake Tapper of CNN, never known as a conservative, has blasted Hollywood, U.S. businesses and others who profit off the Chinese government while ignoring or downplaying claims of “genocide and crimes against humanity” at the hands of the communist regime.

Tapper, who accused these companies of a willingness to “whitewash for gold,” started his closing monologue Sunday by pointing to the Women’s Tennis Association’s recent decision to “take serious steps to protest [China’s] brutality” after questions emerged about China’s treatment of tennis star Peng Shuai.

“The WTA not only spoke out against this injustice, but it decided to suspend all tournaments in China because of its treatment of Peng Shuai,” Tapper said.

The “State of the Union” anchor said the problems in China are much more pervasive than these recent questions surrounding Shuai and pointed to the persecution of the Uyghurs, among other minority groups.

“The allegations against the Chinese government go far beyond its treatment of Shuai,” Tapper said. “This year, both the Trump and Biden administrations have asserted that China is committing, quote ‘genocide and crimes against humanity.’”

Toward the end of the monologue,  Tapper unloaded on American corporations for perceived greed and a penchant for ignoring these horrors.

“Of course, Apple and Nike publicly claim to decry slave labor, but, to be clear, the behavior we are seeing from U.S. corporations is not about a company surviving,” he said. “It’s about discontent with just hundreds of millions of dollars, desiring instead billions of dollars. And those riches, they create blinders.”

Disney was another businesses Tapper mentioned as he mentioned the company’s recent decision to remove an episode of “The Simpsons” from its streaming platform in Hong Kong after facing pressure from the Chinese communist government. “There is no amount of money that can buy enough soap to wash that blood off their hands,” he said of all those companies purportedly ignoring these injustices.
