Evangelist Franklin Graham has launched a crusade to convince presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to clean up his language.
“Franklin Graham, son of the great Billy Graham,” Trump said during a speech in Pennsylvania last weekend. “And I like Franklin so much. And he wrote me a letter. And he said, ‘President, I love your speaking, your ability to speak is incredible. Your storytelling is great. But it could be so much better if you didn’t use foul language.’”
Trump said he believes Graham is wrong but also said he’s “been working so hard” to clean up his language.
“The problem is, if you don’t interject every once in a while — I’m only talking about one or two times during an entire speech,” he said. “You know, these speeches go on for two hours. One or two, Franklin, give me one or two words.”
It was at least the second time Trump had told the story during the past week. Earlier in the week, Trump said Graham “wrote me a beautiful letter” and encouraged him to stop cursing. Trump alllueded to one curse word saying, “It’s just such a descriptive word. I don’t know how you replace some of these words.”
Trump, who has been counseled by Graham in the past, said of the preacher, “But I think of him when I curse.”
Presidents are not immune to cursing in the Oval Office or the campaign trail. Earlier this year President Joe Biden said on camera that Fox News Reporter Peter Doocey was “Stupid son of a bitch.” After the the Affordable Care Act passed Biden commented to President Obama on camera that it was a “Big f–ing deal.” President Obama also cursed when describing Mitt Romney to the Rolling Stone in 2008. The winner for cursing, however may be Democrat President Lyndon B. Johnson. His grasp of vulgarities was legend among the press and those who knew him, according to news reports and history websites.
