10 Million Grill Brushes Recalled Due to Ingestion Danger

California-based Nexgrill Industries Inc. is recalling more than 10.2 million units of metal wire bristle grill brushes sold across the United States due to ingestion risks posed by these items, the Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) says.

“Small metal wire bristles can detach from the brushes and stick to the grill or food, posing an ingestion hazard and risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery,” CPSC said.

“Nexgrill is aware of at least 68 reports and reviews where small wire bristles detached from the grill brushes, including five reports of consumers who swallowed metal bristles and sought medical treatment to remove the bristles from their digestive tract or throat.”

The recalled items include a 19-inch grill brush with model number 530-0024; a grill cleaning brush with scraper, model number 530-0024G; a long-handle grill brush, model number 530-0034; a grill brush and scraper, model number 530-0039; a grill brush with scrub pad, model number 530-0041; and a wood handle grill brush, model number 530-0042.

Only items with these model numbers are affected by the recall, CPSC said.

The grills come with black plastic or wood handles that measure around 18 to 21 inches long. The items, distributed between 2015 and 2026, were sold at Home Depot stores and on its website for roughly $5 to $15, and were manufactured in China.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled grill brushes and contact Nexgrill for a full refund to be issued as a gift card. Consumers will be provided with a registration code as part of the recall process and will be directed to upload a photograph of their grill brush with that code and their initials to the recall website to register for the recall,” CPSC said.

After successful registration, customers will receive instructions on how to dispose of the recalled grill brush.

On its website, Nexgrill asked customers to stop using the recalled items immediately, even if they appear to be in good condition. To secure a refund, customers can visit Nexgrill‘s website or contact the company at 800-942-1498.

Once buyers receive an email confirming that their claim has been successful, the gift card will be issued within roughly seven to 14 business days, Nexgrill said.

The Epoch Times reached out to Nexgrill for comment, but did not receive a response by publication time.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has previously highlighted the ingestion hazards posed by grill brushes.

A 2012 report detailed six cases from a single hospital in which people were treated for unintentional ingestion of wire grill-cleaning brush bristles.

“All six reported outdoor residential food grilling and use of commercially available wire grill-cleaning brushes. The severity of injury ranged from puncture of the soft tissues of the neck, causing severe pain on swallowing, to perforation of the gastrointestinal tract requiring emergent surgery,” the agency said at the time.

“Before cooking, persons should examine the grill surface carefully for the presence of bristles that might have dislodged from the grill brush and could embed in cooked food.”

An August 2023 study published in the American College of Surgeons detailed the case of a 47-year-old woman who suffered abdominal pain after eating a hamburger on a home grill.

Alternative options for cleaning grills include nylon-bristle grill brushes, liquid grill cleaners, a ball of aluminum foil, and a halved onion.
