Sen. Hawley wants ‘In God We Trust’ on Federal Buildings

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley has introduced the In God We Trust Act, which would require the national motto to be displayed on all federal buildings.
“Our national motto goes all the way back to the days of President Lincoln,” he said. ”Congress adopted ‘In God We Trust’ as our national motto in 1956 during the rise of atheist communism, and it remains our national motto today. The In God We Trust Act will ensure that the federal government — as well as the American people for whom it works — never forgets the ultimate source of the liberty and prosperity this country enjoys. As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, this bill would restore faith to its rightful place in the halls of government.”
Hawley previously made this recommendation in his 2024 National Conservatism Conference speech when he said it was time to “take the trans flags down from our public buildings and inscribe instead, on every building owned or operated by the federal government, our national motto: In God We Trust.”
In 2011, the House of Representatives passed H. Con. Res. 13, reaffirming “In God We Trust” as the national motto and supporting its public display in all public buildings and other government institutions.
If passed, the legislation would give the General Services Administration one year to inscribe or display in a place of prominence the national motto of the United States in all federal buildings. The legislative push comes just days after President Trump announced his America Prays program, which calls on Americans to dedicate time every week to pray for the nation and to underscore faith as central to the its founding and future
“President Trump has revived one of America’s most prominent and powerful founding principles — we are one nation under God,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital. “As we approach the 250th anniversary of the greatest country in the world, President Trump invites Americans to pray for our nation and for our people. America is stronger with the power of prayer.”
