Clean Comedy Expands Its Reach on Streaming
Clean comedy is heading into fall with more streaming outlets competing for families who want laughs without profanity or explicit material.
The newest entry is “Wonder Presents: The Stand-Ups,” a six-special collection now available through the Wonder Project subscription on Prime Video. The faith-and-family studio behind “House of David” completed its weekly rollout Aug. 6 with Caroline Rhea’s “A Labor of Love.”
The series also features Sterling Scott, Ola Dada, Zabrina Douglas, K. Trevor Wilson and Erica Sigurdson. Their sets draw on marriage, parenting, aging, work and cultural differences. The programs are described as family-friendly, though Wonder Project does not market every performer or routine as explicitly Christian.
Scott told The Christian Post that clean comedy should be viewed as a genre, not a lesser form of stand-up.
“I wasn’t trying to be clean,” Scott said. “I was just telling you the truth, and it happened to be clean.”
More clean comedy streaming options
Families looking for more choices during the next three months also can turn to Dry Bar Comedy. Its subscription service says it carries more than 300 specials and adds new content weekly. Selected performances are available through Angel Studios, YouTube and other streaming services.
Metro Voice has regularly reported on Great American Pure Flix, and it offers a more explicitly Christian catalog. Its current selections include “Date Night Comedy,” “Pure Flix Comedy All-Stars” and specials featuring Chonda Pierce, Michael Jr., Jeff Allen, Kenn Kington and Jonnie W. Themes often include church life, marriage and parenting.
The expanding menu gives viewers an important distinction to make. “Clean” generally describes content standards. “Christian comedy” more often identifies the performer’s worldview or the subject matter. Some programs fit both categories, while others simply offer stand-up designed to be watched with a wider range of ages.
