Jimmy Swaggart Still Unconscious After Heart Attack

'Without a miracle, his time will be short'

Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart remains in critical condition following a massive heart attack. His family is asking for continued prayers as his condition remains unchanged, according to a statement shared with members of the Family Worship Center Church in Baton Rouge, La.

“We do not question God, we do not blame God, we do not argue with God,” his son, Donnie Swaggart, told members of the Family Worship Center Church in Baton Rouge, La. “We always want God to do things immediately and on our schedule. But God’s ways are not our ways.”

A Facebook post later added that “there has been no change in his condition” and asked for supporters to “continue to lift him up in prayer and believe God for a miracle — but above all, we trust in the Lord’s perfect will.”

Donnie Swaggart said his father suffered the heart attack at home after numerous falls and was revived before being taken to a local hospital. Since then, he has remained in the intensive care unit and has not regained consciousness.

“I’ve never seen so many people arrive at one time, and I want to thank them,” he said. “They were able to get a heartbeat back. Without a miracle, his time will be short. But we believe God; we’re not giving up.”

Swaggart launched a worldwide ministry

Swaggart, who turned 90 in March, launched into full-time ministry in 1955. He serves as the pastor of the Family Worship Center and is the founder of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries. He and his wife, Frances, have one son, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Admission of sin

He has preached the gospel on television longer than any other American evangelist in history, according to his ministry website. At his peak in the mid-1980s, Swaggart was the country’s top-rated TV preacher, and his services were broadcast to more than two million households. However, his image was bruised after he was linked to a 1987 scandal involving a prostitute whom he met in a New Orleans motel. Swaggart never confessed to anything more than an unspecified sin during a televised apology in which he tearfully delivered his infamous “I have sinned” speech.

In a post on Swaggart’s Facebook page Tuesday morning, the family said there was no update on his condition.
