What do math, science and big data have to do with baseball? A lot, it turns out, as attendees will learn at a fascinating, free Linda Hall Library event June 15, featuring a panel of baseball experts. “Beyond the Box Score: Baseball in the Analytics Era” will explore the role of big data in baseball, its impact on the history of the game and what it means for the future of America’s pastime.

In this program, MLB Network Host Brian Kenny will moderate a discussion between panelists:

Daniel Mack, assistant general manager, research and development, Kansas City Royals;
Sean Forman, CEO of Baseball-Reference.com, the definitive online guide for baseball statistics. His website provides statistics for every player in Major League Baseball history, and it’s regularly quoted by major media organizations and baseball broadcasters; and
Shakiea Taylor, baseball historian, sports writer and deputy senior content editor for the Chicago Tribune.

“This will be a rare opportunity for baseball fans, and anyone interested in numbers, to learn from an impressive group of industry insiders how there’s more to baseball than meets the eye,” said Eric Ward, vice president for public programs at the Linda Hall Library. “Almost every strategic decision in baseball can be traced back to numbers, and our panelists are uniquely qualified to break it all down for us. You’ll walk away with a greater appreciation and understanding of the game.”

Baseball statistics have been around as long as baseball, but the way those numbers are interpreted continues to evolve and grow more sophisticated. The Analytics Era in Major League Baseball emerged in the early 2000s. A slew of new metrics, such as OBA (weighted on-base average), FIP (fielding-independent pitching) and WAR (wins above replacement), began to supplant batting average, a pitcher’s win totals and other traditional statistics related to player performance.

Today, every front office employs mathematicians and computer scientists in a quest to develop an objective understanding about the game. Known colloquially as sabermetrics, this scientific analysis complements the traditional eye test in assessing a baseball player’s value, worth and promise, as well as guiding in-game strategy.

Analytics also provide a historical context that can help uncover cross-generational details about the game. A notable example of this impact occurred in late 2020, when Major League Baseball announced that it would include Negro League records into official MLB records.
