SW 21st Street east of the I-470 bridge to Belle Ave was open to traffic this morning following substantial completion of the project. Cleanup work, including some striping, will be completed over the next week, weather permitting, but traffic now flows again on the bridge over I-470.
The closure of SW 21st Street started on Monday, April 29th, and has opened a week earlier than planned. The City of Topeka had announced the emergency month-long closure of the street was necessary due to concrete pavement deterioration at the joints, and the situation was made noticeably worse by the harsh winter.
Also, KDOT will be starting their project to overlay I-470 northbound on or before June 15, and the project needed to be completed prior to the beginning of that overlay work.
