Second season of “House of David” now streaming on Prime Video

But you'll have to pay extra to see it

The second season of the popular “House of David” series is now available on Prime Video’s Wonder Project subscription service. It follows David’s path to the throne as he clashes with Saul and strengthens his friendship with Jonathan.

“I love season two; I love it even more than season one,” creator and co-director Jon Erwin told “Crosswalk Headlines.” “It’s epic in every way.”

Both Christian and secular audiences can relate to the story of David, which is an epic hero’s journey, he said.

“If you love `Harry Potter,’ `Lord of the Rings,’ `Star Wars,’ in many ways, those character archetypes, those hero’s journey stories, I think, are in some ways rooted in the story of David,” Erwin said. “This is like the original hero’s journey. David is the original Luke Skywalker.”

Season two begins where last season left off, with Israel grappling with the aftermath of David’s victory over Goliath as David ponders how God will bring about his ascent to the throne.

“If you love the Bible as I do, I hope that this story will bring a greater sense of meaning and depth,” he said. “I know I don’t read the Psalms the same way after making the show. I just have such a deeper understanding of the life that the character was living.

“But what I love about the show is you don’t have to know anything about the Bible to enjoy the show, because it feels very similar to `The Lord of the Rings’ and it feels like it has those same thematic elements as `Harry Potter.’”

The actors and directors agree that the drama will continue to draw in viewers even deeper. Although the Bible already tells the story, there still is much that will shock and captivate audiences.

“The Bible has the story really beautifully compacted, but it’s like a beautiful flower,” said Ayelet Zurer, who plays Queen Ahinoam, the wife of King Saul. “There’s so many layers. It’s an onion, so you’re going to get the onion this season — inside of the emotions, the relationships between the characters, the betrayals, the love. It’s going to be intense.”
