Bill Maher, who struggles to keep the humor in his anti-religious political rants, has come out against “Noah”
LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – While he rejects the label of “atheist,” comedian Bill Maher is upfront with his disdain for all forms of religion. He has now managed to offend Christian, Jewish and Muslims with his line about God as depicted in the new movie, “Noah.” He told his HBO “Real Time” audience recently that God was a “psychotic mass murderer. “Maher made the comments during a conversation on the biblical story of Noah.
Bill Maher has been highly critical of religion and views it as highly destructive. However, he has been known to reject the “atheist” label.
“But the thing that’s really disturbing about ‘Noah’ isn’t the silly; it’s that it’s immoral. It’s about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it, and his name is God,” Maher said, adding, “What kind of tyrant punishes everyone just to get back at the few he’s mad at? I mean, besides Chris Christie.”
Maher was on a roll. “Hey God, you know you’re kind of a [expletive] when you’re in a movie with Russell Crowe and you’re the one with anger issues. Conservatives are always going on about how Americans are losing their values and their morality, well maybe it’s because you worship a guy who drowns babies.”
Maher went on to say that the real problem conservatives face today is the restrictions they put on themselves, not the restrictions enforced by big government.
“I’m reminded as we’ve just started lent, that conservatives are always complaining about too much restraining regulation and how they love freedom, but they’re the religious ones who voluntarily invent restrictions for themselves.”

“I’m not an atheist. There’s a really big difference between an atheist and someone who just doesn’t believe in religion. Religion to me is a bureaucracy between man and God that I don’t need. But I’m not an atheist, no.”
Maher has also occasionally referred to himself as an “apatheist”, saying “I don’t know what happens when you die, and I don’t care”, adding, “there’s atheist and there’s agnostic, and I’m okay with us not splitting the difference on those; if you are just not a super-religious person, you are on my team”
