Not every New Year’s Eve celebration requires staying up until midnight and dealing with crowds of people. Several family-friendly events in the Kansas City area will allow everyone to have a good time and still have their kids in bed well before midnight.
The Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium will hold Zoo Year’s Eve from 10 a.m. until noon in the main lobby auditorium. The event is free with paid zoo admission, and many area residents received passes for free admission that will expire at the end of the year.
Science City at Union Station features special activities all day during Noon Year’s Eve, which has become one of Kansas City‘s most anticipated family traditions. The celebration includes:
• Pajama jam headbands, noon to 5:30 p.m.
• Dream catchers, noon to 5:30 p.m.
• Spin drums, noon to 5:30 p.m.
• New Year’s Eve races, noon to 5:30 p.m.
• Low-sensory board games, noon to 5:30 p.m.
• Martian New Year, 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
• Face painting, 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Mr. Stinky Feet, 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
• Magic Scott, 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
• The Great Science Show, 5:15 p.m.
• Balloon Bash for Little Learners, 5:45 p.m.
• Balloon drop, 6 p.m.
Noon Year’s Eve at Wonderscope includes crafts, face painting, balloon artists and a confetti celebration at noon to welcome in the new year early. It will be held from 9 a.m. to noon.
In what has become a New Year’s Eve tradition, the Kansas City Mavericks will play the Wichita Thunder at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. Faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
Families can come dressed in their comfiest pajamas to count down to the new year at Lenexa Public Market. This family-friendly countdown begins at noon and will feature board games, giveaways, a time capsule activity, a singalong of the New Year’s anthem Auld Lang Syne and more.
