Be prepared to be swept away by the dazzling touring production of “Funny Girl!” It’s part of the 24–25 PNC Broadway Kansas City season on stage at the Music Hall for 8 performances Dec. 3–8, 2024.“Funny Girl” premiered on Broadway in 1964. The original production propelled a young Barbra Streisand to international fame; Later, she would reprise her role in the 1968 hit film adaptation, winning both an Academy Award and Golden Globe award.
The revival showcases the story of Fanny Brice, the vaudeville star whose tenacity and talent propelled her from humble beginnings to one of the most beloved performers on Broadway. “Vogue” compares it to a musical comedy heaven describing it as “vivacious and delightfully glitzy.”Katerina McCrimmon takes on the monumental role of Fanny with a blend of vivacity and depth that feels fresh yet faithful to the character’s spirit. Reviews say her ability to balance humor with moments of raw vulnerability allows the audience to connect with Fanny in an entirely new way.
The production retains its signature songs, such as “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “People,” with McCrimmon delivering them in a manner that feels both timeless and thrilling. Grammy-winning “Don’t Cry Out Loud” singer Melissa Manchester as Mrs. Brice offers a warm, grounded counterpoint to the youthful energy of McCrimmon’s Fanny, while Stephen Mark Lukas as Nick Arnstein adds a suave charm.
What sets this stage version apart from its iconic 1968 film and even the original 1964 Broadway show, both starring Streisand, is its intimacy. While the film leaned into cinematic spectacle, this production emphasizes the personal journey of Fanny. McCrimmon crafts a Fanny who feels more relatable, emphasizing her scrappiness and wit alongside her insecurities.
The current touring production is directed by Tony Award winning Awaichael Mayer (Thoroughly Modern Millie) and features the classic score by Tony, Grammy, and Academy Award winner Jule Styne. Lyrics are provivided by Tony Award nominee and Grammy Award winner Bob Merrill, (comprising additional songs from Styne and Merrill).
The revamped choreography and direction add a modern polish without losing the period charm of the original.
This touring Funny Girl is a high spirited tribute to the resilience of its heroine and the enduring power of musical theater. It’s a love letter to anyone who dares to dream big, even when the odds are stacked against them. For fans of the original film and newcomers alike, this production will offer a moving, energetic take on a beloved classic.
