Jimmy Carter’s Remarkable Legacy with Habitat for Humanity: A Tribute to Humanitarian Service

Habitat for Humanity reflects on the extraordinary volunteer legacy of former President Jimmy Carter, whose commitment to affordable housing transformed lives across the United States and around the world.

“We are deeply saddened,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “President and Mrs. Carter began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity near their home in southwest Georgia more than 40 years ago and soon brought worldwide attention to the need for decent and affordable housing.”

Carter’s dedication to Habitat for Humanity was nothing short of remarkable. Worked alongside volunteers in 14 different countries, building, renovating, and repairing 4,447 homes. Their most recent volunteer project was particularly poignant. Nashville build famously showed Carter showing up just one day after receiving 14 stitches from a fall, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to service.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Carter’s Habitat work was his personal philosophy. Reach out to others was his belief, a sentiment that drove him to continue volunteering well into his later years.

The Carters’ impact extended far beyond construction. Signed Bibles were often given to families at the end of each home build. Their annual Carter Work Project became a beacon of hope and community service, inspiring thousands of volunteers each year.

2024 Carter Project continued to bring together volunteers, homeowners, and supporters to build 30 new homes. This ongoing commitment ensures that the Carters’ vision of affordable housing continues to transform lives.

The organization’s gratitude is palpable. As Reckford noted, “The Carters put Habitat for Humanity on the map, and their legacy lives on in every family we serve around the world.”
