Kobach Opens $2.3 Million in Kansas Victim aid Grants

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach said Wednesday that applications are now open for six state grant programs that help fund services for crime victims across Kansas.

More than $2.3 million was awarded last year through the programs, according to the attorney general’s office. The money supports local and state organizations that work directly with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, human trafficking and other crimes.

The first step in the application process is due April 10. Awards are expected to be announced this summer.

The funding covers a broad range of victim services. Some grants help pay for emergency shelter, counseling and assistance for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault and their children. Others support child advocacy centers, programs serving abused and neglected children, and supervised child exchange and visitation services for families facing domestic or family violence.

One of the programs, the Human Trafficking Victim Assistance Fund, was created by the Kansas Legislature in 2013. It helps pay for law enforcement training and services for victims of human trafficking and the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

The grant cycle opens as many victim service agencies continue to deal with steady need. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported 21,911 domestic violence incidents statewide in 2024. The bureau also reported a violent crime rate of 4.2 offenses per 1,000 people. In homicide cases, domestic violence was listed as a circumstance in 17.1 percent of reported murders.

Those figures help explain why this money matters. For many agencies, grants like these help keep basic services in place for people in crisis.  The Trump administration is also making grants available.

The six programs are administered through the attorney general’s Victim Services Division and the Victim Rights Coordinator. Applications must be submitted through the Grant Management System on the attorney general’s website.
