National World War I Museum announces homeschool week discounts in October

Local homeschool families can enjoy discounted admission at Kansas City’s National World War I Museum and Memorial during the week of October 5-11.

A discounted rate of $6 for students and $10 for each adult, up to two per group, provides ticketed access to all gallery areas of the museum and memorial, along with a free National WWI Museum and Memorial Family Guide. Discount tickets will be available only onsite at the ticketing counter. All students under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

A guided tour will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on October 8. Tickets for the tour, which are complimentary with admission, will be available on a first-come, first served basis at the ticketing counter.

Along with the permanent exhibitions, homeschoolers may be interested in a special exhibit called the Little War. Visitors can explore the lives of children swept up by the storms of World War I while adults were fighting on the front line and supporting the war effort.

What does a world war look like to a child? For some, it was saying goodbye to their grownups going away to far-off lands. For others, it was holding their grownups’ hands as they fled their homes. Often, it was hunger and hardship.

The Little War was created for children and adults to understand the Great War from a child’s perspective, using imaginative play, original toys and games, photos and other artifacts from the time period. The exhibition text is offered at two separate reading levels to ensure accessibility and comprehension.

Children and adults can further explore the themes of the exhibition in a small hands-on “living room” featuring World Ward I-era children’s books and contemporary literature, as well as games and puzzles for play. The Little War is appropriate for all ages to discover a lesser-known part of World War I as they journey through childhood in wartime.
