Princeton Scholar Proposes Fidelity Month Over Pride Month

As a subdued Pride Month ends, momentum is growing for a Fidelity Month that celebrates traditional relationships and values.

“Faith in God, fidelity to spouses and families, patriotism and love for country and community have always been the glue that held Americans together,” Professor Robert George said, according to “National Catholic Register.” George, a legal and political scholar at Princeton University, appeared on EWTN to discuss the founding of the social movement and grassroots initiative Fidelity Month, aimed at bringing the country together after years of divide.

Fidelity Month “is a positive, grassroots movement to heal division and restore unity in our nation,” according to the organization’s website. “It celebrates June as a season of recommitment to God, our spouses and families, our communities and country.”

George’s inspiration came from a survey that showed significant declines in Americans’ belief in the importance of religion, family and patriotism.

“The one area in which the faith of Americans increased was in the importance of money,” he said. “But material things are secondary to what really matters: God, marriage and children and our communities. If we’re going to have unity and strength as a people, it has to come from some common commitments.”

He emphasized the importance of both civic and spiritual foundations.

“First, we have our commitments as Americans to the Constitution, our system of government and our republican civic order,” he said. “But by itself, that’s too thin. Americans have always relied on more than that. Across races, ethnicities and religions, there’s been a shared belief in the importance of God. Our national motto is ‘In God we trust,’ and we say ‘One nation under God’ in our Pledge of Allegiance.

George said he hopes Fidelity Month will serve as a rallying point for Americans to reclaim the enduring values that have long been the bedrock of national unity.

“Part of the Fidelity Month effort is to restore the integrity of our society by restoring faith, by restoring the institution of the family, by reviving our understanding of what really matters, more than money, more than power, more than influence,” he said.
