WWI exploded in the late summer of 1914. Armies took the field in bright uniforms. Navies steamed to sea flying the colors of their nations. For the ensuing years of global war until the peace treaty was signed on June 28, 1919, most history has centered on battles, leaders and destruction.

Throughout this time of global upheaval and a devastating war primarily fought by men, women around the world actively responded to the tumult by accepting, and at times actively pursuing, new responsibilities and roles. French women, like others, worked in war industries, in agriculture, in nursing, in transport, for suffrage and equal pay and respect. In France, recent scholarship has shown that the survival of women’s fashion also played an important role in life during the Great War. Women’s fashion needed to adapt to the necessities of new actions, scarcity of materials and ever-present societal morale needs. The fashion industry, particularly in France, responded.

Silk and Steel feature original dresses, coats, capes, hats, shoes, and accessories. Topics presented are the evolution of the war-time silhouette, Parisian designers during the war, military uniforms’ influence, women’s uniforms in France and America, war work, economics of fashion, and post-war emancipation.

This special exhibition, Silk and Steel: French Fashion, Women and WWI, is presented by the National WWI Museum and Memorial from Sept. 25, 2020 to April 11, 2021 in the Wylie Gallery

Pregnant women are invited to Pregnancy Resource Clinic on March 19 and 20 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon for free maternity clothes. Maternity Closet visits are by appointment only. Call Emily at 816-387-8090 by Wednesday, March 17 to make an appointment. In addition to the clothing, attendees may enter for a prize drawing, receive goodie bags, and receive information about the PRC My Baby & Me prenatal parenting classes. Maternity Closet is adapted to include proper social distancing precautions. Participants must attend alone by appointment only.

The Maternity Closet at PRC is located at 1502 N. 36^th St. in St. Joseph, on the lower level. It began in 2017 as an outreach of St. Joseph PRC. In January 2021, eighteen women attended Maternity Closet.

“I love getting to meet moms in our community and help them find clothes that fit well and give them confidence for the journey of motherhood,” says Resource Development Coordinator, Jennifer Morris.

This is a free outdoor event for families with children. Join us as we seek to share a love of reading by encouraging each child to select one brand new book to take home and add to his/her library. Geared toward pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade children. This FREE event is hosted by Altrusa International of Greater Kansas City, Inc in partnership with “The Merc.” It was made possible by a grant of $4000 from Altrusa International Foundation to improve the economic well-being and quality of life in communities that host an Altrusa club.
