Global Methodist Church Surpasses 7,000 Churches

United Methodist Split Reshapes Denomination

The Global Methodist Church has surpassed 7,000 congregations worldwide, marking a significant milestone in the continuing realignment within the United Methodist Church. The announcement highlights the scale of a division that has been building for decades inside global Methodism.

The theologically conservative denomination, launched in May 2022, said this week that it reached the threshold as churches across the United States and overseas continue to join it. Leaders described the growth as both institutional and spiritual, pointing to what they called renewed commitment to biblical authority and historic doctrine.

“This moment reminds us that growth isn’t just measured in numbers. It is found in repentance, renewal and lives being transformed by Jesus Christ,” the denomination said in a public statement.

Bishop Mark J. Webb said the milestone reflects what he described as the faithfulness of God and the willingness of congregations to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. “Each congregation is a living witness to the transforming power of Jesus Christ,” Webb said. He added that the church remains focused on making disciples and spreading what it calls scriptural holiness.

The growth follows years of turmoil inside the United Methodist Church, once the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States. The conflict centered on the Book of Discipline, which prohibited the blessing of same sex unions and the ordination of noncelibate homosexuals. Although delegates repeatedly declined to remove that language at General Conference, enforcement varied widely among regional bodies.

Previous reporting by Metro Voice News documented the denomination’s steady expansion. In late 2025, the outlet reported that the Global Methodist Church had reached 6,000 congregations. Earlier coverage noted more than 4,000 churches as disaffiliations accelerated after pandemic delays disrupted the denominational process.

A proposed separation protocol introduced in 2020 would have created a structured path for congregations to leave. The COVID 19 pandemic postponed the General Conference where the measure was to be considered. By March 2022, organizers of the Global Methodist Church said they would proceed without waiting for formal approval.

Thousands of congregations ultimately left the United Methodist Church. Many joined the Global Methodist Church, reshaping American Methodism in ways that continue to unfold.
