Doorstep’s Operation Soup Line fundraiser is back at Ag Hall

Operation Soup Line is back for the 17th annual event. It is the biggest fundraiser of the year for Doorstep, Inc., and is held at the Stormont Vail Event Center Ag Hall, located at 17th & Topeka Blvd. It will be held Tuesday, February 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature entertainment from the Silver Lake Jr. High Choir, the Topeka High Jazz Band and the Highland Park Band. Celebrity servers from local tv and radio stations, government officials, Washburn coaches and sponsors will be on hand to dole out the goodies again this year.

They will be serving chili, chicken tortilla and the Portuguese Green soup that used to be served at McFarland’s Restaurant, as well as a variety of desserts along with water, coffee or lemonade.

Auction items will include at least 35 theme baskets that attendees can bid on while they are there.

The pricing is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Carryout is available and delivery will also be available in the Topeka area on orders of 10 or more. These will have to be pre-ordered by Friday, February 21st.

The goal of Operation Soup Line is to raise $18,500 from the event to support Doorstep programs. Doorstep helps neighbors in need with emergency services like food and clothing, but also prescription assistance, dental vouchers, rent and utility assistance and local transportation in the form of gas vouchers and bus tickets to get to and from work or medical appointments.

Doorstep has five staff members and over 70 regular volunteers that provide services Monday through Friday every week. The organization is primarily supported by 53 interfaith member congregations, with help from grant funding from the City of Topeka, Shawnee County and United Way Basic Needs.
