Gibson’s ‘Resurrection’ will venture beyond biblical narrative
Metro Voice has previously reported on the follow up to Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ.” Now, Gibson says his two-part sequel will take moviegoers beyond the Gospel accounts and into spiritual realms surrounding Jesus’ death and resurrection. “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” starring Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus, is scheduled for release May 6, 2027. Gibson said the film will depict the “firmament before the creation,” Hell, fallen angels and the origin of Satan. The filmmaker acknowledged that some elements involve informed speculation, but said he sought to remain within orthodox Christian teaching. “It doesn’t just stay on the planet here,” he told The Christian Post im a video interview. Gibson expects the films to be more uplifting than “The Passion,” while also showing the hardships Jesus’ followers endured after the resurrection.
Matthew West releases “Jesus Is King”
Matthew West is pushing back against the culture’s emphasis on personal control with “Jesus Is King,” a 12-track album releasing Sept. 25. The five-time Grammy-nominated artist said the project began with a deceptively simple question: Who is Jesus? West wrote “Jesus is ____” on a dry-erase board, then developed songs exploring different answers. The result includes “Good,” “Back to Jesus,” “Here and Heaven” and “Shame Is Not My Story.” West says that surrendering to Christ brings freedom rather than imprisonment. “We have a humble king. We have a good king,” he said. “Good,” the album’s lead single, recently became West’s 39th No. 1 song as an artist and songwriter.
‘Digger’ could test Cruise’s box-office appeal
Tom Cruise leaves franchise filmmaking behind in “Digger,” an Oct. 2 dark comedy that transforms the actor into an eccentric oil tycoon whose drilling operation triggers a, yes, you guessed it, global ecological crisis. The Alejandro González Iñárritu film is Cruise’s first non-franchise movie since “American Made” in 2017. Early reactions have been mixed, leading Hollywood in Toto critic Christian Toto to question whether the climate-change satire will connect with Cruise’s traditional audience or strengthen his chances of winning a competitive Oscar. Cruise, who received an honorary Academy Award in 2025, has described the role as the culmination of four decades of acting. Despite criticism of the film’s message, several early reviewers have praised his performance though others have said it retells old plotlines about bad big business destroying the earth. David Charvet chose fatherhood over Hollywood
Former “Baywatch” star David Charvet says walking away from Hollywood allowed him to become the father he wanted to be. Charvet, 54, left acting in 2013 after appearing in television shows including “Baywatch” and “Melrose Place.” He subsequently built a career in residential construction while raising his two children. “I left Hollywood because I wanted to be a good dad,” he told Fox News Digital. Charvet said his children, rather than his career or financial success, will be his legacy. He recently returned to television as a contestant on Fox’s “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.” Charvet said the grueling competition gave him an opportunity to show his children what he had sacrificed and what he was still capable of accomplishing. Anne Wilson’s story headed to big screen
The family tragedy that helped launch Anne Wilson’s music career will become a feature film from Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company. “My Jesus,” based on Wilson’s book “My Jesus: From Heartache to Hope,” follows the teenage singer after her brother Jacob’s death led her to post an online performance that attracted music-industry attention. Aliza Kate Barlow will portray Wilson, with Gavin Casalegno playing Jacob. Monica Potter, Charles Esten and Beau Bridges also have been cast. Kay Oyegun wrote the screenplay and will make her feature-directing debut. Production is expected to begin in October. Wilson’s debut single, also titled “My Jesus,” topped Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart and spent seven weeks atop Christian Airplay. Theologian challenges messages hidden in children’s movies
Parents should pay closer attention to the worldview beneath even wholesome children’s entertainment, theologian Trevin Wax says. Wax, an author and visiting professor at Cedarville University, argues that familiar messages such as “follow your heart,” “live your truth” and “you are enough” promote expressive individualism rather than a biblical understanding of freedom. “True freedom is submission to God,” Wax told CBN’s “Faith in Culture.” He said Scripture presents freedom not as escaping all restraints but as bringing personal desires into alignment with God’s will. Wax and Thomas West explore those distinctions in “The Gospel Way Catechism for Kids,” which features 50 faith-centered questions and answers. Wax said the catechism is intended to provide families with a framework for deeper conversations about Scripture, culture and Christian discipleship.
