FEMA Aid Arrives After Deadly Missouri Tornado Devastation

Federal disaster relief from FEMA is on its way to Missouri after last month’s deadly storms left a trail of destruction across St. Louis and surrounding counties. President Donald Trump signed off on the disaster declaration Monday, unlocking much-needed aid for thousands of residents now facing the long road to recovery.

FEMA officials say the help can’t come soon enough. On May 16, a massive EF3 tornado ripped through the Central West End and north St. Louis, carving out a path nearly a mile wide and stretching almost 23 miles. Five people were killed. More than 5,000 homes and buildings were damaged or destroyed, according to city officials. Whole neighborhoods are still without power. Tarps cover rooftops. The damage bill? A staggering $1.6 billion — one of the highest ever for the region.

“We have families out here who lost everything. This federal help means they aren’t alone,” said St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones at a city press conference Monday. “We need everyone to know: Recovery is possible, but it’s going to take time.” Disaster Assistance Centers are now open, offering everything from housing help to mental health support.

FEMA’s Willie G. Nunn, who’s leading the Missouri FEMA response, urged survivors to start by filing insurance claims, then head to DisasterAssistance.gov or call 1-800-621-3362 for federal help. “We’re committed to seeing this through,” Nunn said.

For many, the storm’s aftermath is still raw. “I never thought I’d see my street like this,” said resident Angela Morris, standing outside what’s left of her home. “But we’re tough. We’ll rebuild.”
