‘Passion of the Christ’ Returns With Must-See Sequel Preview
"It’s a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years to tell," says Gibson
Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” will return to theaters Sept. 10 through Sept. 17, giving moviegoers a behind-the-scenes look at his long-awaited sequel more than seven months before its release.
Lionsgate and Fathom Entertainment are bringing the 2004 biblical drama back to theaters nationwide in a new 4K restoration with Dolby Atmos sound. Tickets are now available through Fathom and participating theater box offices.
The limited engagement will include a preview of “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One,” which is scheduled to open May 6, 2027, on Ascension Day.
The date reflects a change in Lionsgate’s original release plan. Part One previously was scheduled for Good Friday, March 26, 2027. “The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two,” once planned for May 2027, now is set for May 25, 2028, also Ascension Day.
As Metro Voice has reported, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen has replaced Jim Caviezel as Jesus in the new films. Mariela Garriga portrays Mary Magdalene, taking over the role played by Monica Bellucci in the original. The cast also includes Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter and Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate.

Gibson said in a statement released after filming concluded that the project had occupied him for more than 20 years.
“This is far more than a film to me,” he said. “It’s a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history.”
“The Passion of the Christ,” which follows the final hours of Jesus’ earthly life through his crucifixion and resurrection, earned more than $600 million worldwide after opening in 2004. It also received three Academy Award nominations.
The restoration was made from the original camera negative. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel supervised a new color treatment, while Gibson reviewed and approved the Dolby Atmos audio mix, according to Fathom.
The Passion sequel preview will be shown only as part of the theatrical re-release.
