The First Hymn Movie Revives Ancient Christian Song

A new documentary is bringing one of Christianity’s oldest known hymns from the deserts of Egypt to modern church sanctuaries and movie theaters.

The First Hymn” traces the discovery of an ancient scrap of papyrus uncovered in Egypt that contains remnants of what scholars describe as the earliest surviving Christian hymn. The film follows Professor John Dickson as he examines the fragment and explores what its lyrics reveal about the beliefs of early Christians.

According to the documentary, the hymn includes theological language that some have argued Christians did not hold so early in history. Dickson’s work with the text becomes the starting point for a larger effort. The film documents his collaboration with contemporary worship leaders Chris Tomlin and Ben Fielding to set the ancient words to new music for the modern church.

“I couldn’t be more excited to hear congregations sing this song,” Fielding said. “Our hope is to give back to the modern church the very hymn that echoed through the halls of the early church. That we can still sing today those same words written 2,000 years ago, in unity, is a profound gift.”

Written centuries before Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant divisions, the hymn reflects a time when the church was united in Christ. The documentary includes a special live performance of the song, which appears on Tomlin’s latest album.

“‘The First Hymn’ is a precious gift from early believers, some who literally gave their life for the gospel,” Tomlin said. “And now, 2,000 years down the road, we can stand in that long line of faithful believers and sing with them.”

Fathom Entertainment is presenting the film in theaters nationwide March 24 and 25. The theatrical release will feature an exclusive bonus introduction from Tomlin and Fielding, created specifically for cinema audiences. Additional information is available at the film’s website.

The film can be streamed, including on Prime Video.
