Two area schools on lockdown during manhunt

Overland Park police say they have captured one of two suspects after a police chase that started in Missouri. The search for the individuals forced the lock downs at two Shawnee Mission School Districts schools. Kansas Highway Patrol officers continue to search on foot for the other suspect.

The chase began Thursday morning when officers spotted a truck reported stolen out of Raytown, Kansas Highway Patrol picked up the pursuit when the fleeing driver crossed the state line.

John Diemer Elementary School, located at 9600 Lamar Avenue, and Indian Woods Middle School, at 9700 Woodson Drive, are in lockdown, Officer John Lacy of the Overland Park Police Department confirmed. He said the lockdown started around 8:30 a.m. after a pursuit began in Kansas City and continued into Kansas.

The suspects were in a vehicle being chased by the Kansas Highway Patrol. The suspects dumped the vehicle in the 100 block of Horton Drive.

Lacy said one suspect went west and the other went east.
