2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NIV) “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”
“Swish-swish!” the Christmas pirate walked closer to his victim. He was almost set to make his final charge when he heard, “Son, put that Christmas wrapping paper tube down and open the rest of your gifts!”
Little Bob enjoyed playing with the boxes and tubes that were a part of the exciting Christmas season. A box that had possessed his baseball cap now became a pirate’s hat, protecting his head. The flat box that once had held his new t-shirt from grandma had been transformed into a mighty shield. The long and short wrapping paper tubes transformed into becoming a long sword and short dagger.
These creative substitutes can be typical with children. Sometimes, adults try to make things up when it comes to religion. It’s like they are not satisfied with the truth gift, so they exchange it for what they want.
2 Timothy tells us that some people will lay down the gift of sound teaching and will pick up to play with myths and whatever else their itching ears want to hear. It’s like a child laying down a beautiful expensive gift so they can play with the empty box.
God warns us to be mindful of the truth gifts He has given his people. In Hebrews 2:1 the Bible warns us to listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
So this Christmas season, enjoy the gifts you have been given by your loved ones, even if they are the wrong color, or don’t fit. And every day hold on to the precious gift of Jesus, because He always fits every situation.
