This Week’s Jameson Picnic Marks 135 Years With Cars, Cookbook
A long-standing tradition continues this weekend in Jameson, Mo., as it celebrates its 135th anniversary.
The Jameson Picnic, held annually since 1892, is one of Missouri’s longest-running community events. Jameson is about an hour north of the Kansas City Metro, and its signature event honors the city’s history and spirit, bringing together neighbors and families for a weekend of engaging activities.
From Thursday, August 6th through Saturday, August 8th, visitors can enjoy familiar activities such as the parade and Poker Run. This year’s picnic will also feature two new additions: a car show on Saturday, and the debut of a local author’s new cookbook on pies.
The car show will feature cars, trucks, tractors, and motorcycles and organizers hope it will become a new picnic tradition and bring even more visitors to the small hamlet. Activities include a music jamboree, impersonators Ben and Laura Johnson, games for all ages, an auction, and the 3rd Annual Jim Duly Poker Chip Run.
The commemorative cookbook, Pies from the Picnic: Celebrating 135 Years of Deliciousness by Anne Rauth, was written specifically for the Jameson event.
Rauth has attended the Jameson Picnic since she was a child and compiled 135 recipes in honor of its 135th anniversary.
“I decided to write a cookbook because pies are such a large tradition at the Jameson Picnic,” she told Metro Voice.
In addition to sending out a call for submissions for pie recipes from local residents, she also gathered a few from a 1950s cookbook. The book features a variety of pie types such as fruit, chocolate, and savory. In addition to recipes, Rauth’s book also includes information about the picnic’s history and memories, plus photos from past events.
“I wanted the cookbook to be more than a collection of recipes,” Rauth says. “It is a tribute to all those who have baked, sliced or purchased a slice of pie at the picnic. My hope is that people will use the recipes, remember the stories and pass both along to their own families.”
Copies of Rauth’s book will be available for purchase during the picnic while supplies last, and only 135 copies are being printed.
Visitors will also be able to purchase homemade pie for only $3 a slice, along with other items from the cook shack like the picnic’s famous pork tenderloin sandwiches. As in years past, there will be free entertainment and no cost for the family-friendly activities.
“The Jameson Picnic has always been a time for people to reconnect, enjoy the amazing food at our cook shack and celebrate the community we love,” said Jan Duly of the Jameson Lion’s Club. “We hope former residents, neighboring communities and first-time visitors will all join us!”
