Aladdin fulfills summer childhood wishes

Three wishes for the kids this summer include Aladdin, Aladdin, and Aladdin

The school year ended last week for many around the metro last week. Kick off a great summer by attending Aladdin at the Music Hall May 30 through June 4 at the Music Hall in Kansas City.

By Anita Widaman

The classic story has been in the hearts of kids through centuries-old folktales including “One Thousand and One Nights,” and adapted from the 1992 animated Disney film. It is a musical that appeals to all ages and that affinity has helped make it the tenth highest-grossing Broadway production of all time.  In fact, it has been in my heart as one of the musical’s most memorable songs, “A Whole New World,” was sung by my friend Karen at my own wedding. No doubt I may play it during our 30th-anniversary celebration in July!

The current tour does include some updating, but follows the age-old story. Aladdin is set in the fictional Arabian city of Agrabah. The production follows the familiar tale of a poor young man who is granted three wishes by a genie in a lamp. He uses the three wishes to win a princess and to impede the plans of the sultan’s evil Grand Vizier, Jafar.

The musical opened on March 20, 2014 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York.   The show was nominated for five Tony Awards, winning one for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for James Monroe Iglehart. Aladdin is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Something Rotten!).   Aladdin’s music is by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice, and Chad Beguelin.

The musical is gorgeously staged with a design team, sets, costumes and lighting from Tony Award winners Bob Crowley (Mary Poppins), Gregg Barnes (Kinky Boots), and Natasha Katz (An American in Paris).

Aladdin is magical, comical, and visually stunning.   Attending Aladdin will make all parents wish for this summer to be the best summer of their children’s life to come true!
