Operation Blessing Delivers Urgent Aid to Congo Refugees

Operation Blessing is rushing critical food aid to thousands of people who have sought refuge in Burundi following attacks by militants in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The effort is bringing smiles to children whose lives are deeply affected by Islamic jihad.

More than six million people have fled the ongoing conflict, which has been reignited partly over the control of valuable mineral resources such as gold and cobalt. Although Burundi has opened its borders, life inside the overcrowded settlements remains precarious. Now, a hunger crisis threatens victims who escaped the violence.

The UN reports hundreds of civilians have died in just a few weeks in recent months. In September, rebels linked to the Islamic State killed more than 50 Christians at a funeral ceremony, according to the BBC. Most of the victims were hacked to death with machetes. “Most of them were worshippers taking part in a night vigil at a church in the town of Komanda when they were attacked.,” the news outlet reported.

In Makombe Camp, one of several refugee settlements, basic necessities such as clean water and medical care are in critically short supply. The devastating food shortages now pose a severe threat, making hunger the new enemy for families that endured a harrowing escape from conflict. The daily battle for survival, particularly for mothers and young children, centers on finding enough to eat.

“As we approach World Food Day, I’m reminded of the families in the refugee camp of Burundi,” said Bob (whose last name was not disclosed) of Operation Blessing. “The women and children there are facing hardship with a lack of nutrition and regular sources of food. We’re working with our partners, YWAM Burundi and others, to alleviate this suffering and to bring help and hope to these people.”

Operation Blessing is focused on providing urgent nutrition to the most vulnerable residents at Makombe Camp as World Food Day draws attention to those in need. The organization has committed to delivering help and hope to avert this immediate hunger crisis, despite the overwhelming needs and logistical challenges of the area. Through partnership with YWAM Burundi and other local allies, Operation Blessing aims to stabilize the food supply and alleviate widespread suffering.

“Please remember us as this time approaches, and wherever possible help us to complete our mission,” Bob said. “We appreciate your support. We appreciate your prayers and we ask that you work with us on this mission. Thank you. and God bless you.”
