Adam Hamilton Supports Abortion in Kansas Senate Race

Pastor Adam Hamilton, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Kansas, has publicly backed abortion rights, placing one of the state’s most divisive political issues near the center of his campaign.

Hamilton, senior pastor of Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, said he supports “safe and legal access to abortion” and voted against the 2022 “Value Them Both” amendment. The failed Kansas constitutional amendment would have allowed lawmakers to enact stronger pro-life laws after the Kansas Supreme Court recognized abortion rights under the state constitution. Supporters said it was skuttled by false information on the left and millions of dollars in out-of-state financing by abortion supporters.

Kansas voters rejected the measure in August 2022, with nearly 59 percent voting no. Abortion remains legal in Kansas up to about 22 weeks, making the state a regional abortion destination after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

“As a pastor for 38 years, I have cared for women and families facing difficult decisions around pregnancy,” Hamilton said. “I acknowledge there is a moral tension surrounding the topic of abortion, but I do not believe that politicians should be making these decisions for women.”

Hamilton also said he opposes a proposed state constitutional amendment that would guarantee equal rights for men and women “beginning at conception.”

The announcement sharpens the contrast between Hamilton and many Kansas Republicans, who have continued seeking pro-life policies since the 2022 vote. It also gives Democratic primary voters a clearer picture of where the well-known Johnson County pastor stands after launching his campaign as an “independent-minded Democrat.” Critics have said that, contrary to being “independent,” his views align firmly with the party.

Hamilton has also called for some form of congressional service limits, criticized tariffs and the war with Iran for increasing costs, and support biological males participating in women’s sports.

He is seeking the Democratic nomination in a race that could test whether a prominent liberal United Methodist pastor can build a statewide coalition in deeply Republican Kansas.
