Cold weather catches Rescue Mission, others off guard

Area ministries that serve the homeless were caught off guard by the recent, seemingly instant, change from summer to fall.

The Kansas City Rescue Mission as one of those ministries and says they currently have no coats to give out to the homeless. Earlier this week, they posted the need for coats on Facebook.

“A few days ago our executive director went up to our clothing room right before we were getting ready to distribute clothing and realized that there were no coats,” said Julie Larocco, Development Officer, Kansas City Rescue Mission.

Every year, the KCRM gives out nearly 500 coats to those in need. After posting to Facebook, they received dozens of coats that were given out just as quickly as they came in.

“We need coats for men, any size, gently used, clean hopefully or new coats would be wonderful,” said Lorocco.

The need doesn’t stop there. Larocco said the mission has no coats for the women currently in their women’s shelter.

“We have 20 women who are at our women’s center and right now, we have no coats for them this winter.”

KCRM will accept drop-off donations. They also take monetary donations online.
