Today’s news briefs include a surprise gold medal for women’s cycling; Iran could attack Israel any moment and Missouri Squad member Bush may lose election today.
Attack on Israel could come any time
US intelligence assessed that there would be two waves of attacks by Hezbollah and Iran, senior American officials reported during a security consultation held by US President Joe Biden. A senior American official noted that Iran and Hezbollah’s response is still “in the planning process.” Biden administration officials say they are preparing to fend off the planned attacks and are exerting diplomatic pressure on Iran and Hezbollah. Last week Israel killed both leaders of Hezbollah and Hamas. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a briefing to reporters on Monday that the Biden administration has conveyed a message to Iran that the US will defend Israel if it is attacked, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Missouri Squad member may lose today
Missouri Rep. Cori Bush could become the second squad member to be ousted from Congress. Today’s primary comes six weeks after Rep. Jamaal Bowman lost his own New York primary. The antisemitic Bush faces three challengers to represent Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, the most prominent of whom is Wesley Bell, according to CNN. Bell has gained wide support of moderate Democrats and pro-Israel groups. “Bell’s campaign has been more vibes-based – criticizing Bush for being too ideologically-driven, not being responsive enough to her constituents and – perhaps most potently – voting against President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill,” reports the news outlet. Polls show Bush losing.
US wins Gold in shocking ending to women’s cycling event
The US has picked up an unexpected gold medal after Kristen Faulkner pedaled to victory in the women’s cycling road race event. With about 3.4 kilometers to go, reports Fox News, Faulkner found herself behind Dutch cyclist Marianne Vos and Belgium’s Lotte Kopecky. She was just ahead of Hungary’s Blanka Vas. Faulkner was right behind Kopecky when she pulled out from the group and zoomed around them. She then pulled away from the group and grabbed the gold medal by about a minute. The last Americans to medal in the event came at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles when Connie Carpenter-Phinney and Alexi Grewal won gold and silver.
