Carrie Underwood surprises church by joining worship team for song

Members of Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tenn., were surprised last Sunday when country music star Carrie Underwood helped lead worship. She joined the worship team as they sang “Goodness of God.”

The passionate worship song features lyrics including, “From the moment that I wake up until I lay my head/ Oh I will sing of the goodness of God/ All my life you have been faithful/ And all my life you have been so, so good.”

A portion of Underwood’s appearance was posted by fan accounts on Instagram. Underwood, 41, has been outspoken about her Christian faith ever since her song “Jesus, Take the Wheel” topped music charts in 2005. She has recorded several faith-themed songs in the years since, including “Temporary Home” and the Grammy-winning “Something in the Water” in 2014. Then in 2021, the country star released “My Savior,” an album of Christian hymns. The project featured CeCe Winans on “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”

“It’s been such a blessing to make music like this, inspirational music that is near and dear to my heart,” Underwood said of the album in a statement at the time. The album debuted atop both Billboard’s Top Country Albums and Top Christian Albums charts.

Underwood has said that her humble upbringing, family, and church provided the values for a strong foundation for her to succeed in the music business.

“Growing up on a farm with loving parents and our church family defined my values,” Underwood said. “A small town with good people helped form me. I was rooted in something solid before I got to spread my wings.”

Instilling those values in her children, with husband Mike Fisher, is important.

“Mike and I do all we can to raise our two boys with values like the ones I grew up with in Checotah,” Underwood explained. “Down-to-earth, church on Sundays, plenty of grass and trees and space outside for them to roam. At night, when we put the boys to bed, we pray out loud with them. Just talking to God, letting them know he hears their every word.”

During her career thus far, Underwood has also appeared on Michael W. Smith’s 2014 “The Spirit of Christmas” album on the song “All Is Well,” and included the original song “Sweet Baby Jesus” on her 2020 Christmas album “My Gift.” She also contributed harmony vocals to the song “Something Greater” on singer-songwriter Matthew West’s album “All In.”

Her surprise church appearance comes amid news she has joined ABC as the latest judge on “American Idol,” the singing competition that made her a household name. Underwood won season five of the show in 2005. In an Instagram post of his own, longtime “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest described Underwood replacing outgoing judge Katy Perry as “a full-circle moment.”

“Welcome home,” he said. “Thank you, Ryan,” Underwood replied. “Excited to be coming back home.”
